This is why, despite using the outward aesthetics of an oppressive and unforgiving world, the mechanics of the games are designed to actually be quite forgiving of mistakes in a way that masocore games aren't. The original FS Souls-type games, on the other hand, are built on the opposite principle: They want you to win. Games in which being hard is the point are kaizo/masocore games like IWBTG: They want you to lose. ![]() The difficulty is only there to facilitate the actual purpose of a Soulslike, which is to create a sense of accomplishment in the player through the subjective experience of overcoming struggle. The difficulty isn't the point, and never was. People who think difficulty is what makes Souls games and Soulslikes great don't understand them on a fundamental design level.
